I think everyone dreams of seeing Machu Picchu. Don’t you? This is perhaps one of the most famous historic sites in the world as it represents the pre-Colombian era and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you fancy an adventure this year I would recommend embarking on the Inca Trail. You are guaranteed the experience of a lifetime and you will get to see Machu Picchu, otherwise known as “The Lost City of the Incas”.
The Inca Trail is without a doubt the best trekking adventure in South America. I can say this from experience as I set off on the trail last year with a group of friends. It will take you on a journey to discover the areas of natural beauty which South America is so famous for, as well as the chance to see lush cloud forest, subtropical jungle, Inca ruins and remains, and of course, Machu Picchu. Brave enough to take on the challenge? The truth is that all you need is time, a bit of money, an Inca Trail permit and a sense of adventure. Plus some good travel insurance, just in case.
When to go?
The first thing you must do is decide when to go. This is a difficult decision because Peru has a varied climate. I suppose you can visit at any time of the year. However, I would recommend going between May and September as this is when the weather is mild, sunny and dry. There are often fewer tourists at this time too. Remember that even though it is warm during the day, the temperatures drop at night so you will need to take warm clothes.
How long do you need?
It really depends on how much time you have and your level of fitness of course. There are routes designed for anything from 2 day treks to 7 days — this can be some tougher hiking than you find back home.
Flights to Peru
The nearest airport to the Inca Trail is Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport, which is located in Cusco just 70 miles from Machu Picchu. International flights usually have a stopover in the capital city of Peru, Lima, before heading to the final destination, Cusco. Some of the airlines which operate flights to Peru are Lan Airlines, TAM and American Airlines.
